Helias senior Dane Haugen was recently awarded “Student Athlete of the Week” from KRCG 13 News. He was nominated by the new Helias athletic director, Brad Dempsey.
“It was a nice honor,” said Haugen. “I think Coach Dempsey really put a good word out for nominating me…as “Student Athlete of the Week” for KRCG.”
There are criteria to win this award. A student has to be a mid-Missouri high school senior playing a varsity level sport. This student must also have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. They can be nominated by a coach, athletic director, or teacher.
Haugen is currently the Helias Student Council president and co-captain of the Helias boys’ soccer team. To be a student athlete, one must be able to balance academics with athletics.
“It’s a lot of responsibility, but I think that we have a great council and everyone is really working hard to be the best that we can be,” Haugen said about being student council president. “As a team I think we can achieve that and have a lot of energy.”
Other than responsibility, Haugen thinks it takes a strenuous schedule.
“It’s a lot of late nights,” said Haugen. “I think it’s worth it doing everything that you can and trying to have the best high school experience possible.”
He is not sure of where he wants to go to college, but he wants to do something in business, possibly accounting.
“Put yourself out of your comfort zone,” Haugen advises the underclassmen. “Really just try something new, and see if that’s something that you might be interested in, and learn new things and become a broader person.”
